Wellness Committee to host one monthly educational and participatory activity at Flagstaff Academy.
Overarching goal is to educate and motivate students about the importance of daily movement, healthy nutrition, overall wellness – and the agency we each possess to make positive choices. Topics to be presented in a neutral, non-judgmental tone; hold energetic and upbeat conversations with students about that month’s topic.
Most monthly activities to be held during student lunchtime (either in lunchroom or en route to recess) as to increase exposure during ‘downtime.’
100-Mile Club

Starting October 14th you can bring your Dragons to school on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 7:40am. They will walk, jog or run for 20 minutes and then head inside. Over the course of the school year they will rack up individual and group miles!
What is 100 Mile Club?
100 Mile Club is an evidence-based program founded in 1993 with the goal to fight childhood inactivity and obesity. Additionally, 100 Mile Club wants to make running fun and create a sense of community between kids, their families and their school. The very big goal of achieving 100 miles during the course of the school year is to motivate kids and teach them that seemingly impossible goals can be achieved when taken one step at a time. Learn more about 100 Mile Club here.
Why 100 Mile Club?
To allow our Dragons to build community with other Dragon runners, to develop a sense of accomplishment and pride in their abilities – and to give them a healthy start to their day! Is there an entry fee?
Is there a Fee to Participate?
No cost for participation in 100 Mile Club. Just show up on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and be sure your Dragon is prepared to walk, jog or run. Parent volunteers and staff will be sure your Dragon is safe while working on their miles.
What will our Dragons earn for their mileage?
Your child’s miles will be tracked at an individual level as well as added to the overall school accumulation. Let’s see how many miles our Dragons can achieve!
- Community with other 100 Mile Club Dragons!
- A sense of accomplishment!
- Pride in their capable body and mind!
- A healthy start to their day!
What else is important to know about 100 Mile Club at Flagstaff?
Flagstaff PTO Wellness Committee looks forward to helping your Dragons experience 100 Mile Club but we need Parent Volunteers to make it run smoothly.

Upcoming Wellness Activities…
October 16th | Howww much sugar is in that?
Wellness Committee will display popular candy, candy bars, soda with the amount of sugar they contain in sugar cubes (grams). We’ll contrast with unprocessed, whole foods like fruit. The emphasis will be on ‘everything in moderation.’
Ask your Dragon what junk food item they can ditch for a better, healthier substitute!
November 19th | Thankful I Can ______
Wellness Committee is going to help get students and staff in the attitude of gratitude by writing down what they are thankful their bodies and brains do for them. These will be written on a large sheet of paper that can be hung on the PTO bulletin board.
What is your Dragon thankful they can do? Share as a family what you are all thankful your bodies and brains do for you on a daily basis!
December 17th | Stress Relief/Release
Wellness Committee to provide students/staff with education to relieve stress via breathwork or circulation enhancing massage/movement.
Ask your Dragon to share what they learned about breathwork and easy massage/movement to relieve tension and stress from their bodies and minds.
January 7th | Pledge to Honor My Body and Brain Every Day in 2026
Wellness Committee to set a lunchroom table with an ‘official document’ for students to sign – pledging that they will honor their bodies and brains every day in 2026.
Suggestions printed out about what ‘honoring themselves every day’ might look like: getting plenty of sleep, choosing a book instead of a screen, brushing teeth twice a day, choosing a whole food vs candy, taking a walk, helping a grandparent, serving others, etc.
Ask your Dragon to share what their pledge was and think of a family pledge you can fulfill in 2026 – service, gratitude, movement, caring for others, etc.
February 18th | Go For It! // Let It Go!
Wednesday, February 18th will kick off a wellness campaign called Go For It! // Let It Go!
This will include a PTO-provided poster in each classroom. One side of the sheet is for ‘Go For It!’ with goals/dreams students have. The other side is for ‘Let It Go!’ which represents letting go of habits or attitudes that haven’t served them well.
At the end of the week, Wellness Committee will collect each poster and tally the top three participating classes. These winners will receive a PTO sponsored prize or coordinated prize with the teacher – extra recess, fun activity, etc.
March | Spring Break BINGO Cards
Wellness Committee BINGO cards distributed electronically prior to Spring Break; goal is for students to have more movement and less screen time over the break! There will be follow up after Spring Break for card collections and drawing for prizes.
Be sure to encourage your Dragon to check off their BINGO card boxes over Spring Break!
April 22nd | A Bike Is Not Just A Bike
Wellness Committee has asked a local author to share her very own book with Flagstaff Academy: a children’s bicycle themed book read (to classes or in Media Resource) by local author Brenna Jeanneret: “A Bike Is Not Just A Bike” (non-fiction book about how the bicycle ushered the women’s revolution).
Dragons will be encouraged to ride their bikes, roller skates, skateboards (or any other type of wheels they have!) as the weather improves!
May 13th | Hydration Education
PTO Dragon Wellness plans to share hydration education with students at lunch (and possibly before/after school) on Wednesday, May 13th. Resources about electrolytes, dehydration and general hydration will be shared.
Dragons can education their own families on the importance of hydration!
